The Cost of Affluence

“perhaps this essay will drag you with me, into the abyss of despair”

Acceptance, perhaps, can be built
By using a slight mental tilt:
Try to construe
An objective view,
Without too much blaming or guilt.

Abandoned Nuclear Reactors in the Future

The nuclear Doomsday Machine
Is not clean, or earth-friendly green;
It’s a time bomb that’s ticking,
And when it stops clicking,
Blows apart what's left of our scene.

Our unthinking nuclear spree
Provides a backup guarantee:
If not global heat,
Nukes assure we’re dead meat;
Not overly cautious, were we?

On top of what other things suck,
There'll be nuclear plants run amok;
When too much of this dread
Piles up on my head,
Sometimes I say, "WTF?"

There’s not much that really compares
To these serious real-life scares
For which we won’t contrive
Any way to survive,
But as usual, nobody cares.

Cassandra

When first understanding doom’s script,
Your mind’s turned around like you’ve tripped;
Next, your predictions
Are greeted as fictions,
And people just think that you’ve flipped.

NASA

What is a space program worth
While we fail on our planet of birth?
We’re not going to Mars
Or out to the stars—
We won’t even survive here on earth.

Einstein Vindicated

"Einstein vindicated as neutrinos obey speed limit"

Ever since time first began,
Light traveled as fast as it can;
Al’s theories still thrive
(Except for warp drive)
‘Cause he’s fucking Einstein, man!

It sure is a clean machine
For particles to careen,
But putting that drive
Into how to survive
Would make me feel much more serene.

What is important to know?
Where should our best thinking go?
Not so much something new,
Rather, what’s best to do
While we’re slipping down off the plateau.

Technology isn’t a way
We can end up saving the day,
But it seems beyond doubt
That there is no way out,
So whatever, I guess it’s O.K.

More South Park

Kenny

Kenny helps get us instilled
That doom prophecy will be fulfilled:
Whatever we do,
Before the show’s through,
Somehow, we’re gonna get killed.

Cartman

The concept’s not too esoteric:
The future will look just like Eric;
He’s got the right stuff
For playing it rough
And being completely barbaric.

Chef

Gonna make sweet love all night long,
Pretty woman, take off that thong;
Play with my dong
And I’ll sing you a song,
Oh woman, you can't go wrong....

Chef! CHEF! CHEF!

Wha? Oh, hello, children.
