The Cost of Affluence

“perhaps this essay will drag you with me, into the abyss of despair”

Acceptance, perhaps, can be built
By using a slight mental tilt:
Try to construe
An objective view,
Without too much blaming or guilt.

Abandoned Nuclear Reactors in the Future

The nuclear Doomsday Machine
Is not clean, or earth-friendly green;
It’s a time bomb that’s ticking,
And when it stops clicking,
Blows apart what's left of our scene.

Our unthinking nuclear spree
Provides a backup guarantee:
If not global heat,
Nukes assure we’re dead meat;
Not overly cautious, were we?

On top of what other things suck,
There'll be nuclear plants run amok;
When too much of this dread
Piles up on my head,
Sometimes I say, "WTF?"

There’s not much that really compares
To these serious real-life scares
For which we won’t contrive
Any way to survive,
But as usual, nobody cares.

"End of Empire News" Blog

While headed for doom on life’s cruise,
There’s up-to-date news you can use:
The reality views
Which you may peruse
At the “End of Empire News.”

When first understanding doom’s script,
Your mind’s turned around like you’ve tripped;
Next, your predictions
Are greeted as fictions,
And people just think that you’ve flipped.

What is a space program worth
While we fail on our planet of birth?
We’re not going to Mars
Or out to the stars—
We won’t even survive here on earth.

Einstein Vindicated

"Einstein vindicated as neutrinos obey speed limit"

Ever since time first began,
Light traveled as fast as it can;
Al’s theories still thrive
(Except for warp drive)
‘Cause he’s fucking Einstein, man!

It sure is a clean machine
For particles to careen,
But putting that drive
Into how to survive
Would make me feel much more serene.

What is important to know?
Where should our best thinking go?
Not so much something new,
Rather, what’s best to do
While we’re slipping down off the plateau.

Technology isn’t a way
We can end up saving the day,
But it seems beyond doubt
That there is no way out,
So whatever, I guess it’s O.K.

More South Park

Kenny helps get us instilled
That doom prophecy will be fulfilled:
Whatever we do,
Before the show’s through,
Somehow, we’re gonna get killed.

The concept’s not too esoteric:
The future will look just like Eric;
He’s got the right stuff
For playing it rough
And being completely barbaric.

Gonna make sweet love all night long,
Pretty woman, take off that thong;
Play with my dong
And I’ll sing you a song,
Oh woman, you can't go wrong....

Wha? Oh, hello, children.

Once we’ve accepted our fate,
And the fact we can’t alter its rate
Or make its course veer,
Like the headlight-struck deer,
We’ve got nothing to do but wait.

When confusion and feeling stuck surge
So you don’t even know your own urge,
Don’t run away:
You’ll find, if you stay,
That soon something new will emerge.

Who’da Thunk It?

An intimate talk with a friend,
Intelligence to comprehend,
Great ideas we have penned,
Fine arts that transcend—
Who thought this would all ever end?

Kubler-Ross Stalling

Bargaining can become an obsession
To delay the next stage in succession;
When it finally gets through
That there’s nothing you can do,
It’s time to deal with depression.

Vanity of Vanities

Vanity, all is in vain:
All that man strove to attain
Will return, as he must,
Back to earth’s dust,
And nothing of it shall remain.

Just Passing Through

Overshoot’s no aberration,
But a recognized expectation:
A new permutation
Of species innovation
For a temporary duration.

Wisdom from Walden

Ask how those who suffer privation
Handle all their frustration;
The answer they’re giving:
Most people are living
Lives of quiet desperation.

Corruption and Global Warming

Seeing corruption’s depressing,
But most folks are acquiescing;
Not up to redressing
That kind of transgressing,
They’ll never stop warming progressing.

Why Prepping is Important

Prepping means being a buyer
For when there is no more supplier:
Then things won’t be dire
When what you require,
You should have acquired prior.

Selective Inflation

Selective inflation for you
Means only enough money to
Buy things you desire
And do not require,
But not for the things that you do.

Feeling Like Cassandra?

What we have to say is so hot,
We can’t see how folks think it’s not;
A more comforting view
Is there’s nothing we can do,
And the long-term difference is squat.
